Leadership Team

CEO and Founder

Charles Anselm, CFA

Charles is an engineer, investment manager and entrepreneur who founded Osyte, with the vision of making human machine collaboration in investment management a reality. Prior to Osyte, Charles worked with pension funds, endowments, foundations, and financial institutions globally for 15 years as an investment strategist, portfolio manager and outsourced chief investment officer (OCIO). He has designed, implemented and managed investment solutions for billions in institutional client assets at Russell Investments. Charles began his career as a technologist and engineer in the telecommunications industry.
Charles holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and an MBA from the University of Texas, McCombs School of Business.
CTO and Co-Founder

Sellappa Gopalaswamy

Sellappa is an entrepreneur, cloud and data technologist with deep technology expertise, and has built products and solutions for over two decades in various industries including financial services. Prior to Osyte, Sellappa was the co-founder and CEO of Qloudable Inc., a cloud acceleration and training platform. Sellappa was also the VP of engineering and later CEO of Sysgain, a cloud services and digital transformation company which he co-founded. He has delivered cloud technology solutions to Fortune 50 companies such as Microsoft and Oracle. Sellappa holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from the University of Madras and an MS in Computer Science from George Mason University.
Head of Quantitative Research

Patrick Rowland, Ph.D.

Patrick is an accomplished economist, quantitative researcher, data scientist and investment strategist with 20 years of experience delivering high-quality quantitative modeling and data analytics for Outsourced CIOs and institutional investors. As the Head of Quantitative Research, he leads the development of financial technology and machine-learning algorithms in support of Osyte’s mission to deliver superior institutional asset allocation capabilities. Patrick was the Director of Capital Markets Research for 12 years at Russell Investments where he developed asset pricing methodologies, capital markets forecasting tools, strategic asset allocation models, and research techniques that were applied to more than $250 billion in assets under management. Prior to Russell, Patrick was instrumental in developing products and solutions at Financial Engines. Patrick holds a Ph.D. in Economics with specialization in international finance, finance, and econometrics from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Head of Portfolio Solutions

Karl Sahlin

Karl is an investment strategist, portfolio manager, and trader who brings over 25 years of institutional investment experience in portfolio construction, asset allocation, implementation, and risk management solutions to Osyte’s clients. Prior to Osyte, Karl spent most of his career at Russell Investments, with his first 14 years including his role as Head of Portfolio Trading and then 11 years as a Senior Portfolio Manager. While at Russell he designed, implemented, and managed investment portfolios for both internal multi-manager funds and external pension funds, endowments, foundations, and financial institutions. Karl’s investment background also includes market making at the Chicago Board Options Exchange. He brings a unique blend of investment management, portfolio operations, and trading skills across a broad range of multi-asset securities and derivative instruments. Karl holds a B.A., Economics/Accounting & Psychology from Claremont McKenna College and a CPA-Retired, Washington State Board of Accountancy License.

Chris Carsley, CFA, CAIA

Chris Carsley brings over 25 years of investment industry expertise. He is currently Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer for Kirkland Capital Group. Chris is also a managing partner of Arch River Capital LLC that currently manages a seed/angel fund. Previously, Chris was Managing Director of Bluewater Global Ltd, an international holding company, where he invested in a variety of direct and indirect venture capital projects.
Prior to entering venture capital investments, Chris was as a senior member of the investment research and analysis team at Benchmark Plus Management. He was also the head execution trader of futures, options and OTC based trades for the Benchmark Funds.
Chris is currently a trustee and Vice President of the Charles Wright Academy Endowment Committee, serving on the board since March 2017. He co-founded the Northwest Hedge Fund Society (now the Seattle Alternative Investment Association) in 2004, and is Co-head of the executive board of the Seattle CAIA chapter that launched in 2017.
Quantitative Research

Artemiza Woodgate, Ph.D.

Artemiza is an experienced quantitative investor, Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Integrated Quantitative Investments, LLC. Prior to launching her own firm in 2020, Artemiza was a quantitative researcher at Man Numeric, where her research efforts focused on alpha signals, data processing, and model construction. Prior to joining Man Numeric in 2015, Artemiza was at Russell Investments for over a decade, where, as senior researcher, she focused on quantitative manager selection.

Artemiza has taught courses in finance, economics and statistics at the University of Washington and the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

She holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Washington, and an MSc and BSc(Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Auckland. Her academic research focused on asset pricing and portfolio optimization. She has published in prestigious academic journals such as the Journal of Finance, Journal of Portfolio Management, and Management Science.

Artemiza also serves on the Board of Directors for the Pan-American Para Taekwondo Union.

Asset Allocation

Bob Collie, FSA

Bob Collie has led consulting practices and research teams in the US and the UK at some of the world’s leading investment consulting firms. Having started his career at Mercer, he spent over twenty years with the Frank Russell Company (later Russell Investments) in London, Tacoma and Seattle in roles that ranged from asset allocation specialist to general investment consultant to business leader to chief research strategist. In 2018, he re-crossed the Atlantic to become head of research for Willis Towers Watson’s Thinking Ahead Institute. Today, he advises investment organizations on best practice in ESG and sustainable investing through Collie ESG Ltd. This advice is focused on understanding and articulating how ESG is integrated into the investment process, and on effectively communicating the organization’s strategy and outcomes to clients and the marketplace. Bob has a first class degree from Oxford University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.
Product Management

Paul Stiff

Paul is a product leader with significant business results through developing clear product strategies, building teams and creating high-value user experiences. His expertise is in consumer-facing, educational and financial technology products.

Paul was the Director of Product Management at Financial Engines, where he was responsible for developing the product roadmap of industry changing investment management and 401(k) retirement advisory services for employees of large corporations. Since his time at Financial Engines, Paul has led product teams at Pandora Media, LiquidSpace, Booxby, Gigster, EarnUp, and most recently at Mystery.org.

Paul is passionate about the outdoors, mentoring young people in STEM curriculum and coaching tennis. He has a BA in Economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Stephen Backholm

Stephen is passionate about helping organizations transition to a technology-driven future. He has more than two decades of experience helping both large and small organizations use technology to solve business problems and gain a competitive advantage. He founded and operated his first technology company at age sixteen and hasn’t looked back. Stephen is the founder & CEO of True Cedar, LLC an IT consulting company that focuses on helping asset managers leverage technology to solve business needs effectively. More recently, Stephen spent five years as the Director of Innovation & Technology for the Washington State Investment Board (WSIB) overseeing their AI & data strategy, cyber security and cloud transition processes as part of $150+ billion in assets under management.
Enterprise Software

Karim Lessard

Karim is an entrepreneur and software engineer with deep experience building systems for industries that span from banking to healthcare. Karim spent 17 years as an intrapreneur in the banking industry, leading teams at Washington Mutual and Bank of America, where he developed software tools & optimized workflows ranging from credit monitoring to home loan approvals. Subsequently, Karim has been the CEO of 7 Simple Machines, a software development consultancy and has been instrumental in the development of solutions for financial services, non-profit and healthcare industries.
